Blueprint for Happiness: Connection Between Self-Care and Mental Health
Self-care has become somewhat of a buzzword or trend in recent years (Self-care Sundays, anyone?). But it’s so much more than a trend; it’s a promise to put yourself first, whether it’s for a whole day or 30 minutes.
Self-care plays a role in maintaining your mental health. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, self-care can help you lower your risk of illness and increase your energy. And that’s not all.
It has been clinically proven to:
- Reduce or eliminate depression and anxiety
- Reduce stress
- Increase happiness
More and more people are, fortunately, discovering the benefits of self-care. In this survey, 64% said self-care has given them a confidence boost, 67% said it increased productivity, and 71% said it increased happiness. In that same survey, these were listed as the top self-care activities: At-home spa rituals Getting a manicure/pedicure Exercising outdoors While this list may give you some ideas, the self-care possibilities are endless!
Do what uniquely brings you joy and peace. And remember, self-care is not selfish. As the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty cup, meaning you can’t effectively support or care for others if you neglect your own well-being. Make a habit of practicing self-care to support your mental health and also better support those around you.
