Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health conditions in the United States.

Fast facts

  • An estimated 40 million American adults live with anxiety.
  • Depression affects more than 21 million American adults each year.
  • 40% of adults in Arizona report symptoms of anxiety or depression.

Some of the common symptoms of depression and anxiety overlap, such as concentration problems, excessive restlessness, worrying, and agitation. Let’s break down the key differences to help you better understand and recognize the signs of each condition.

Symptoms of depression can include:

  • Sadness
  • Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy
  • Energy loss
  • Thoughts of suicide or death
  • Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping

Symptoms of anxiety can include:

  • Persistent nervousness
  • Feelings of impending danger or doom
  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • High heart rate

It’s important to remember that depression and anxiety do not affect everyone the same way, and it’s even possible to have both conditions at the same time. Experiencing some or all of these symptoms over an extended period of time might mean it’s time to talk to a healthcare professional so you can gain a greater sense of control and feel better. There are effective treatment options that you can explore. If you’re in immediate need of help, you can contact crisis lines like the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Teen Lifeline.

AZ Blue members can also take advantage of our mental health resources. Examples:

  1. Unwinding by Sharecare, available to members with Sharecare, is a mental well-being app that has guided breathing exercises, visual relaxation videos, and more to help reduce anxiety and stress.
  2. Pyx Health, currently available to our Medicaid members as we work to expand access, is an interactive mobile health platform designed to address loneliness, isolation, and depression. The app offers screening tools, self-care resources, and activities to increase motivation and resilience. It also offers users the option to speak with a Pyx Support Center staff member who can offer support, companionship, and resources.
