Make the most of your annual physical exam

The more prepared you are for your visit, the more your PCP can help you. Here are some tips to help you get the most value from your visit.

    Make every moment count

Write down any changes in a health condition or any new diagnoses, as well as questions about your health issues before you go. Also, bring a list of your prescription medications and any over-the-counter medications you are taking, including:

    • Vitamins
    • Herbal supplements
    • Information from specialists
    • Visits to the emergency room or hospital.

    Be open and honest

Talk openly with your PCP, even about sensitive topics, like depression, sexuality, or symptoms that may embarrass you. Be honest about lifestyle habits too—even the unhealthy ones. Your PCP is there to help, not judge. The more they know, the better they can care for you.

    Confirm what you've heard

If you don't quite understand, ask your PCP to explain again. One good way to make sure you understand the information your doctor gives you: Try repeating it back to your PCP and ask if you got it right.

    Take notes

It’s easy to forget things your PCP tells you. To help you remember, make notes during or right after the visit, when your memory is fresh. Or consider bringing a family member or friend to take notes for you.
