10 tips for safe toys
December 11, 2024
It’s the holiday season, and that means toy-sharing and gift-giving are in full swing. As you’re going through your gift list, it’s important to stop and consider: Is this toy safe and age-appropriate? Sadly, many children get hurt or even lose their lives because they play with toys that aren't safe or suitable for their age.
December is known as Safe Toys and Gifts Month. This holiday season (and beyond), consider the following guidelines for choosing safe toys for all ages:
Before you purchase a toy:
- Read all warnings and instructions on the box.
- Ask yourself is the toy right for the child’s ability and age.
- Avoid purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, or dangerous edges.
- Buy toys that will withstand impact and not break into shards.
- Look for the letters “ASTM.” This means the product meets the national safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
- Avoid toys that shoot or include parts that fly off.
Before letting children play with toys:
- Inspect toys for safe, sturdy construction.
- Explain how to use the toy.
- Fix or throw away broken toys.
