Knowing Ourselves

Find your balance and boost your well-being by understanding your narrative.
  • The Story I’m Telling Myself

We are often too hard on ourselves if we mess up, feel like we're not good enough, or have trouble at work or home. When this happens, follow these steps to calm your mind.

    • Step 1: Stop and complete this sentence: “The story I am telling myself is…”
    • Step 2: Reflect on if this story is accurate and true, or ask a trusted coworker or friend to weigh in.

Tips for being kinder to yourself:

    • Remember that everyone makes mistakes
    • Keep in mind the things you do well
    • Be gentle with yourself
    • If you wouldn’t say it to a stranger, don’t say it to yourself
  • Understanding My Reactions

Subjects and ideas that challenge our comfort zones can provoke strong emotions. Encountering these feelings offers a chance to delve into the discomfort and gain deeper self-awareness.

    1. Be aware and observe how you feel.
    2. Identify the feeling (for example: anger, sadness, frustration, anxiety, fear).
    3. Try to understand the underlying reason behind your feelings.
    4. Take a pause before responding, if needed.

Be alert to recurring patterns or themes that cause discomfort. It may be beneficial to learn about Emotional Intelligence and how self-awareness of your responses can help in expressing your feelings and requirements.

  • Pause, Breathe, and Re-Center

Understanding self-regulation when we're upset can lower the risk of self-harm or harming others. Manage your response to triggers by recognizing your thoughts and feelings. If you're too emotional to think straight, take a break. Return to the dialogue once you're calm and focused.

Always remember these 3 steps before you react:

    • Pause
    • Breathe
    • Slow down
  • Take Care of You

Your well-being is important! In the hustle of caring for others, it's easy to forget self-care. Dedicate time to activities that delight, soothe, and make you happy. Self-care enhances your ability to look after those around you. Some self-care ideas to get you started:

    • Take a walk
    • Eat something healthy
    • Read a book or listen to a podcast
    • Spend time with a family member or friend
    • Engage in an activity you love like art, hiking, or gardening
